I helped in the kitchen and tutored English at a primary school for underprivileged children. I visited the kids' home, took them to doctor appointments, and motivated them to go to school. This experience has fundamentally changed my view on what is important in life.
I volunteered with COCOA House for a year, providing after-school activities and education to youth in Schenectady. This experience inspired my passion for making higher education more achievable for the underserved community.
As the community outreach coordinator of many clubs on Union Campus, I had many chances to work directly with the STEP Program, a program that was designed to prepare historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students to enter college and increase participation in math, science, technology, health-related fields, and licensed professions. STEP's mission has slowly become one of my mission during my time at Union.
